Alloy Wheels
Alloy wheels are the most common on the market. They are more expensive than steel wheels, but they save money over steel ones. That's because they are lighter and will improve the fuel economy of the vehicle. They are more prone to cracking and bending, but it's a good trade-off for the increased fuel mileage. They come in far more designs and deliver style and function.
Steel Wheels
Steel wheels cost less than the other kinds. They are a great example of function over form; they are for utility, not style. They stand up to the worst weather conditions and driving styles. Steel wheels are heavy and can take a lot of abuse, but they put strain on the axle and fuel efficiency of the vehicle. Police departments use steel wheels on their cruisers because they can slam into curbs many times without breaking.
Forged and Cast Wheels
To make steel or alloy wheels, manufacturers have two options available to them: casting or forging them. Casting metal means melting the metal down to a liquid and pouring it into a mold. When the metal cools, it takes the shape of the mold. The process is quick and less expensive to produce, saving the customer money. Forged wheels are milled out of a solid block of billet aluminum. Forged wheels are significantly lighter than cast wheels and come in cooler designs. The reason is that because the wheels are designed on a CAD program, and greater detail and imagination can be applied to the design.
Split Rim Wheels
Split rim wheels are popular right now among the different types of wheels, and they are easy to spot. They usually feature a series of small bolts lining the outer part of the rim. The bolts are there to hold it all together because the split rims are made of two or three parts. There are a lot of replica split rims out there that only have the look a split rim, but the bolts are purely cosmetic and don't serve any purpose.
Barrel
The biggest part of a wheel is the structure or barrel. This looks like a tube and might be short or long. This part is what allows a tire to be fitted on, usually knowing the size of the barrel Is not needed as Original sizes stay the same.
Lip
The outer lip if the wheel is the as the name states, the outer edge. The outer lip is the part that is most likely bent when a wheel hits a pothole and the most repairable area. Technically the lip can be as big or deep until it meets the face of the wheel.
Valve Stem
A valve stem is where tire pressure is monitored, a small 1-2 inch metal stem somewhere on the outer edge of the wheel. Tire valve stems come in three different types depending on the type of vehicle: Snap-in, Snap-in for High Pressure, and metal clamp in.
Spokes
Besides the size, spokes are what make individual wheels unique and stand out from each other, or the most “cosmetic” aspect of wheels and rims. For example, 90% of steel rims don't have spokes, just full on metal. Spokes are the pieces that hold the wheel together from the outer edge to the center, and the designs can be super basic or intricate. Spoke design usually begins with how many there are, how thick they are, and how they meet the edge of the wheel. For example, if they veer out to a ‘Y' shape, they are called Y spokes.
Center Cap
Smack dab in the center of the wheel is the center cap, where the spokes touch. The center cap is removable, except on steel rims. The purpose of the cap is to cover the hole in the center and protect the lug nuts. A wheel can move without a cap with no problem, generally, a center caps purpose is to have the OEM logo and make the wheel look complete.
Lugs Holes/Nuts
Lug holes are the holes that the center cap covers, in which lug nuts go into to hold the wheel together. Wheels can have 4, 5, 6, or 8 lug holes. The term ‘Bolt pattern' is the measurement from one bolt Is the opposite one across.
Centerbore
This is the big hole in the back of a wheel so it can slide onto the axle of the vehicle. A correct fitting center bore is extremely important, that's why when buying aftermarket parts exact measurements and specs are key!
Prioritise the bolt pattern
Examine the bolt or stud pattern of your old wheels. Your new wheels should match it, or else you won't be able to mount them. You should look for two things: the number of bolts and the distance between the two bolts at opposite ends. Here's a diagram to guide you.
Get the correct rolling diameter
A tyre's rolling diameter, also called overall or outside diameter, is the sum of the sidewall height multiplied by two (since each tyre has two sidewalls) and the wheel diameter. Look at your tyre's sidewall numbers for the measurements. For example, a code of 195/65R15 reveals these values:The first number 195 is the section width in millimetres.
Pay attention to the offset
Watch out for their offset or the measurement from the wheel's mounting hub to the centre line when changing wheels. Here's a quick lesson on offset types:Zero offset - The centre line is aligned with the wheel's mounting surface.Positive offset - The mounting surface sits further out than the centre line, so your tyre sits deeper on your axle.Negative offset - The mounting surface sits on the outer side of your wheel's centre line.
Upsize with care
Bigger wheels are undoubtedly eye-catching, but bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. Remember that the bigger wheels and tyres, the heavier they get. When this happens, your ride may be harsher because of the additional weight on your suspension. If you upsize the wheels, you must change your tyres with lower sidewalls to maintain the right rolling diameter. However, less rubber on your tyres means less shock-absorbing ability and protection against road hazards and debris.
Choose between alloy and steel wheels
Both wheel types have their pros and cons. While alloy wheels are more expensive, less durable, and difficult to repair, they come in varied and appealing designs and give better performance and fuel economy. On the other hand, steel wheels are sturdier against damage, more affordable, and easier to repair. However, they don't look like the wheels you see in James Bond movies. Steel wheels don't come in sleek designs; they use up more fuel because they're heavier.
Buy within your budget
Wheels are costly, especially when you buy them as a set, which can set you back from hundreds to thousands of dollars. The fancier they are, or if you go for customisation, the pricier they get. Remember to factor in the wheel installation fees in your budget.
Shifting friction to the axle
When you push a box on the ground, there's a lot of friction between the bottom of the box and the ground below, because both surfaces are relatively rough:When you push the same box loaded onto a cart with four wheels, there's much less resistance. The box no longer has to slide along the ground so that part of the friction disappears. However, wheels don't eliminate friction entirely, as some people think—far from it! There must be friction between the four wheels and the ground or they'd simply slide along (like something being pushed on ice). Friction between each wheel and the ground helps it "dig in" so the wheel can rotate.
Providing leverage
Wheels on carts help in another important way too: they work like levers. That's a bit more obvious when you look at the ship's wheel below.If you turn the outside of a wheel like this, the axle at the center turns more slowly but with more force. In other words, a large steering wheel helps a sailor to turn a ship's rudder more easily than a small wheel. If you imagine each spoke is a lever, it's easy to see how this wheel works. Why isn't the wheel solid? Thick spokes provide a great deal of strength while reducing the weight compared to a solid wheel of the same size.
Casting
In casting, wheels are made by using a mold. The mold is filled with molten metal; as the metal cools, the wheel becomes strong and rigid. Various types of casting processes result in wheels with different properties. Gravity casting and low-pressure casting are common types of casting.
Gravity casting
In gravity casting, metal is poured into a mold and gravity alone causes the molten metal to fill the mold. This method is simple and low-cost, but aluminum cast this way will not be as dense as with other casting methods. Wheels constructed by this method are therefore made slightly heavier to achieve equivalent strength.
Low-pressure casting
In this method, molten aluminum is pumped into molds at heightened speed, which increases pressure and prevents formation of bubbles. Low-pressure casting is most common type of wheel casting because of the strength and quality of wheels formed by this method.
Forging
The forging method is considered best for making single-piece wheels because the wheels made using this method are both lightweight and strong. In this method, a stronger and denser wheel is produced by shaping an aluminum billet under high heat and at about 900 bars of pressure.
Rim-rolling
In this method, simple casting and a special rolling machine are used to construct wheels. The desired wheel is molded by heating its outer portion, with pressure provided by spinning the unfinished wheel, and sculpting the wheel using specialized rollers. This method creates a wheel similar in quality to forged wheels, but at a lower cost. OEM (original equipment manufacturing) wheels constructed by this method are used in special performance vehicles.
High light technology
This method is used to construct light wheels of racing vehicles. In this method, the material is compressed using rollers along a low-pressure aluminum barrel, which gives it its required shape and form.
Remove loose surface contaminants
Remove loose debris and dust from the rim with a hose or pressure washer. Do not damage the rim's balancing weights.
Scrub the rim using a wash mitt or sponge
If the brake dust isn't thick, scrubbing the rim with a wash mitt should remove most of the residue. You can use regular car shampoo to help to clean the dust.
Spray on a wheel cleaner
We recommend alloy cleaner. Alloy Cleaner is non-corrosive so it won't damage your alloys even if they're scuffed or scratched. Spray it over the alloys, particularly on brake dust build up.
Scrub the rim using a soft-tipped wheel cleaning brush
If the brake dirt won't come off, use a soft-bristled wheel cleaning brush. Alloy wheel brushes are ideal for removing the wheel deposits. They allow you to clean hard-to-reach areas.
Rinse and dry the wheel
Rinse the rim with a hose or pressure washer to remove any leftover residue or particles. Then, wipe the rim thoroughly with a microfibre cloth or towel.
Apply a high-quality wheel sealant
Wheel sealants offer protection against high-temperature brake dust while preventing permanent marks on the surface.
